DC has launched an “After Watchmen” site which recommend graphic novels/series to new readers.

My picks off of the lists are below, enjoy.  With the exception of Transmetropoliton and Fables, if the book is listed as a Vol 1, I’ve read the entire series to date, and my judgment is based on the entire series, not just the first volume.
Please note that these are only DC/Vertigo titles, in alphabetical order, with super awesome ones in bold

  • Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
  • Batman: Hush
  • Batman: The Killing Joke
  • Batman: The Long Halloween
  • DMZ
  • Ex Machina Vol 1: The First Hundred Days
  • Fables Vol 1: Legends in Exhile
  • Identity Crisis
  • Justice Vol 1
  • Kingdom Come
  • The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol 1
  • Preacher Vol 1: Gone to Texas
  • Sandman Vol 1: PReludes and Nocturnes
  • The Starman Omnibus Vol 1
  • Transmetropoliton Vol 1: Back on the Street
  • Y: The Last Man Vol 1: Unmanned
